How to Calculate GSM of a Terry Towel?

Here GSM stands for weight in Grams per Square Meter. This means the weight of one square meter of the towel is expressed as towel GSM.

Like other textile fabrics, GSM of the terry towel is calculated using the following method.

First method:

Cut a test specimen from the towel. Normally, no towel comes 1 meter in width. So, cut a smaller size specimen in a square shape. Let's cut 20 cm X 20 cm from the towel. Weight this specimen.

Let's us assume the weight is 20 grams for 0.04 square meter towel specimen.
Now convert the weight for a towel dimension of 1 square meter.

GSM would be (20/0.04) =500 grams per square meter

Second method:

Let's assume that you have a towel sized 50 cm X 80 cm and it weighs 240 grams. What would be GSM of this towel?

Measure the towel weight per square meter (GSM) by using the following formula.

Sample GSM
= (240 * 10000)/(50 * 80) grams/square meter = (240 /4) = 600 grams/m2

Quality Parameters of Towels

A towel is a basic commodity product which we use day to day basis. Still, it is not possible for all of us to have the full knowledge about the towel. However, if we will have some basic knowledge of the product we will be able to buy a good towel from the market as an end consumer.

Like every product, there are some quality parameters for the towel that must be looked upon while sourcing towel as a buyer. In this post, I will share few basic quality parameters of the towel.

Basic quality parameters of towels
Despite having various quality parameters and quality checkpoints, as the end consumer, we can look at the following 3 parameters which are very important that should be checked for selecting a good towel.

Absorbency:  Absorbency is one of the basic characteristics that a towel should have. We use the towel to absorb water from our body, face, and hands. Therefore a towel should be good absorbent.

Shrinking property: Like other clothes, towel shrinks a bit after washing. When us…

Difference between a Stitching Operator and a Tailor

In the garment industry, these two terms operator and tailor are used interchangeably. But an operator and a tailor have different kind of skill levels and different job responsibilities. A stitching operator basically involved in running one stitching machine and doing one job only where the tailor is involved in doing all kind jobs to make a garment from fabric to finished garment
In the age of industrialization, garments are produced in large volume in the factories that is equipped with a large number of sewing machines. In mass production, garments are made in the assembly lines. In the assembly line workers perform only one specific operation throughout the day. Even throughout the season and year. These stitching workers are called as an operator. They operate only one kind of machine. An operator can run and might have a skill of running more than one machine types. But in most cases in the assembly line, they are allocated to a single operation.

Operators are given trainin…

How to Secure Quality of Imported Apparels

The world has come closer and is shrinking by the day, thanks to the internet. With the shrinking world, the political borders are also diminishing in context to business and trade. Although trade and business have crossed boundaries since times immemorial yet with time and the advent of technology things have become easier. A South American in Brazil actually selling in Asia or probably outsourcing from Europe and selling to a buyer in Asia. It could be anything.

Although the boundaries have diminished the physical distances remain the same, and these physical distances bring in ‘time’. Covering a physical distance is time-consuming and a cost is attached to it and what if the shipment doesn’t arrive or probably doesn’t hold the committed quality standards? The loss cannot be mitigated and a question arises how secure and quality are these shipments of imported international apparels?

Well a few steps can actually save such a loss:

1. Choosing the vendor:  The very first step is to …

Stretchable Fabrics, Different Types of Stretch Fabrics, Quality Parameters of the Stretchable Fabrics

Stretchable fabric A fabric that stretches lengthwise or widthwise or in all directions with the body movement is called as stretchable fabric. In the fitted clothing, sports clothing, ladies jeans and ladies tops stretchable fabrics are used to give comfort with the better fit that moves with the body movement. The stretchable fabric, whether woven or knitted, gain stretch property when a spandex filament (like Lycra) is inserted into the fabric while the fabric is manufactured.
The knits fabrics (Jersey and ribs) have inherent stretch properties but to add an extra stretch the elastane filament is used. The elastane filament is a synthetic fiber.

Different types of stretchable fabrics
Stretch fabrics are categorized as warp stretch and weft stretch. The weft stretch fabrics are majorly found as it is easier to insert spandex yarn in the fabrics at the time of weaving with the weft insertion. Different terms are used by fabric traders for the stretch fabrics such as 2-way stretch, 4…

Why Your Line Efficiency is Low - Identify the Reasons

On the shop floor, every day the production and IE team work hard to improve the line efficiency or at least they try to maintain the monthly average efficiency (benchmark efficiency). But the efficiency level goes down from time to time.

Let’s check the fact.

What is the average efficiency of your production lines?

Let’s assume the average line efficiency of your factory is 60% (Monthly average).

How the balance 40% standard time is lost? Where that 40% of the standard time is gone? (The efficiency data might be different to your factory).

You need to study the fact, analyze data and find out the root causes for having low efficiency.

Ask these questions to yourself and note down the answers to identify the reasons how a factory loss line efficiency.

A dry line - Do you often find that most of the operators in the line sit idle due to a shortage of feeding?

Idle times - Do you see operators sit idle for some reasons? If so what are the reasons?

Quality issues - Do you need to stop oper…

What is a Specification Sheet in Fashion?

A garment specification sheet is a technical document that contains the construction details of the product, a technical diagram/ sketch of the garment, measurements of the product. Here fashion is referred to the apparel and clothing products. The fashion designer communicates the design concept through the specification sheet. The stitch class and seam type are mentioned in the sketch. The diagram also communicates different measuring points by English letter (symbol).

To make the garment pattern, grading of the patterns for different sizes, developing a sample and sourcing of the materials, the spec sheet is followed.

The initial specification sheet is made for developing a proto sample. Later the specification sheet (measurement chart) may be revised after checking the sample FIT and garment construction. In the sampling stage, the quality inspector and buyer QA follow the instruction in the specification for the sample checking and sample approval.

At each stage of sample appro…

How to Calculate Operator Number in the Operation Bulletin

An operation bulletin is an essential tool for garment analysis, manpower and machine number estimation for producing planned quantity. The operator number requirement for each operation is calculated on the OB sheet.

The operator number is calculated using the formula

Calculated manpower = (Operation SAM * Production target per shift) / (Total Work minutes in a shift * Target Efficiency)
Read the operation bulletin preparation method.

Let’s assume

Daily production target is 500 pieces, Operation SAM is 1.5 minutes, Factory works 8 hours a day (i.e. 480 minutes) and Target line efficiency is 70%.
Therefore, calculated manpower

= (500 x 1.5)/(480x70%) = 2.2

For your understanding, I have shown four more operations of a T-shirt. No. of calculated operators and actually allocated operators are shown to produce 2400 pieces per day at 75% target efficiency in 8 hours shift.

The calculated operator number often comes in decimals. But in practice, we can’t assign a fraction of an operato…

How Many Meters of Cloth Do I Need for a Raincoat?

To make one raincoat you need 1.6 to 1.8 meters of cloth when the fabric width is 48-50 inches.

In this post, I am sharing a simple method of calculating fabric requirement for a raincoat. The same method can be used for estimating cloth requirement for any other garments.

Let me explain with the following example. This question was asked by an OCS reader and shared the following measurement of his raincoat.

Raincoat measurements:
- Length = 46 inches,
- Width = 47 inches (body circumference)
- Sleeve length =24 inches and
- Sleeve width=17 inches (circumference of the sleeve near armhole)
What would be the fabric requirement per raincoat in meters?
From the above measurement, the combined front and back body block dimension is 46 x 47.

If you buy a fabric of 48-50 inches wide, you can cut the front and back parts side by side. So you need fabric length for the body parts at least 46 inches + stitching margin plus cutting margin. Assume the margin fabric including both ends is 1 inch. S…
