A Miniature of Handloom Weaving Machine

Recently I visited one garment factory in Bangalore to conduct a training programme.
While returning from Bangalore, I visited the saree shop in the airport to buy one silk saree. It is near shopper stop showroom. The shop was selling mostly silk sarees. In the early morning, there were no customers in that showroom other than me and one more couple who were buying saree.

The showroom has showcased one miniature of the handloom weaving machine. The handloom is made of a wooden frame. In the handloom, there is partially woven cloth.

It was very nice. I like it. I am sharing pictures of that handloom miniature.

What to Check While Inspecting Legging's Quality?

Question: When inspecting a women's legging, what quality defects are we looking for? ... asked by Dave Neimer

Answer Like other apparel products, women's leggings are inspected at the manufacturing stage - after finishing the leggings and before sending leggings to the retailers (buyer). Prior to starting garment inspection, you should know what all points to be covered in the inspection. By doing so, you can perform an effective inspection in minimum time. You have performed both visual checkings as well as measurement checking.

While you start garment inspection, refer the spec sheet, approved sample and style file.

Following are the quality checkpoints for knits women's leggings to be inspected.

Kanban System in Lean Manufacturing (Part#5 of Big Fat Lean)

Kanban is an information system used to ascertain that production occurs only when the demand is created downstream.
Kanban literally signboard or billboard in Japanese, is a scheduling system for lean and just-in-time (JIT) production. Kanban is a system to control the logistical chain from a production point of view, and is an inventory control system. Kanban was developed by Taiichi Ohno, an industrial engineer at Toyota, as a system to improve and maintain a high level of production. (wikipedia, 2015)

Does Employee Happiness Lead to Improved Work Performance?

This is a guest submission from Manoj Singh.
Through decade long process improvement-consulting experience, I will say following are some of the major problems found in the apparel manufacturing industry.
Worker turnover, Absenteeism and Low employee involvement in process improvement These three factors lead low productivity, poor quality, increase in wastage and low profitability. All these problems have a direct relation with worker happiness.

Global companies like Google, Amazon and many other most successful companies have taken serious initiative for improving employee happiness. We all know the company’s growth and innovation comes from their happy and dedicated employees.

The 5S System - An Essential Lean Tool (Part#4 of Big Fat Lean)

5S is the foundation of lean manufacturing. 5S is a method for organizing the workplace. By implementing 5S system in your workplace and following it, you can perform your task efficiently and effectively. This technique will help improving quality of products. It deals with planning for house-keeping.

What is 5S?
5S is an essential lean tool. 5S is a term formed with the initial letters of 5 Japanese words –

Seiri, Seition, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke
5S system will be explained here with the implementation guidelines (briefly).

S1: Seiri - Sort
It is about sorting of items, equipment in a workplace.

The thumb rule followed here is red tagging. Red tags are attached to unneeded items during sort phase. Unnecessary stuff piled impedes flow of work and increases hassles. Remember this quote - if in doubt, throw it out

Implementation: You can start sorting by taking photographs of your workplace and shop floor. Collect photographs of the unneeded items and present to higher autho…

8 Wastes of Lean Manufacturing (Part#3 of Big Fat Lean)

Today’s part covers various wastes of Lean Manufacturing. Lean considers 8 types of MUDA (waste) which need elimination, in most operations.

If you think of setting up a lean culture in your organisation, you have to work on reducing these 8 wastes. You might be already aware of some of this waste. Different authors coined the waste in different terms. As per my study, I found following terms of eight waste mostly used. I have explained 8 wastes with examples of the garment manufacturing industry.

Benefits of Lean Manufacturing (Part#2 of The Big Fat Lean)

In today's part, we will cover various benefits of lean manufacturing implementation.

Benefits are endless. In general, we will focus on a couple of benefits of lean project implementation. It may be an implementation of a number of lean tools. The most benefits of lean implementation in the production environment are followings.

1. Lead time reduction: Order receiving to shipping time can be reduced. In production process, you can reduce throughput time by following one-piece-flow system.

2. Inventory reduction: Lean follows the Pull System and believes in JIT (Just-in-Time) purchase and distribution.
