What is an MIS Format?

Kelly has defined Management Information System (MIS) as “a combination of human and computer based resources, which result in collection storage, retrieval, communication and use of data for the purpose of efficient management of operations and for Business Planning”.

MIS formats are widely used in garment factories as a reporting system. In the garment industry, mostly in garment production, various information is being collected manually in a pre-designed format from each process for various purposes.  Later this information is entered into the computer to store and for retrieval and to provide wide access to the management team.

The purpose of recording is to know actual facts and figures of the shop floor and take a decision based on data. Data should be recorded in such a way that intended analysis can be made later. And most of the users can read and understand information captured in a format. Printed formats, that are used to record primary information are called as MIS formats.
Hourly report format MIS

An MIS format may be electronic (spreadsheet) and physical form. Generally, the report is made on a spreadsheet using the same format as a printed form or it may be slightly different.

All departments use format to record data or make a daily report. Like production report, quality audit report. Whatever information is transferred from one department to another is made in pre-designed form.

1. Line supervisor and production manager need hourly production report. How they will get it? Somebody has to record production data hour by hour. In case somebody has real-time shop floor data tracking system, production data can be seen directly on the computer screen.

2. Suppose, you need to know percentage defective of a line for the day. To know that you have to record data of how many pieces has been made by the line during the day and how many defective pieces are found by checking individual pieces throughout the day. So you need a quality inspection format to capture quality data.
