Without identifying and monitoring the Critical Path, planners may spend time following non-critical activities while the real risks remain unnoticed.
3. Overloading Production Lines
One of the most common planning mistakes is assigning more work to a sewing line than it can realistically complete.
When capacity is overestimated, production falls behind schedule, overtime increases, and delivery commitments become difficult to achieve.
Accurate capacity planning should always consider line efficiency, absenteeism, learning curve, product complexity, and available working time.
4. Depending on Theoretical Capacity
Many factories calculate production capacity using ideal conditions. In reality, machine breakdowns, absenteeism, operator learning, quality issues, and style changes all reduce actual output.

Factories that expect full production output from the first day usually create unrealistic schedules.
Planning should allow time for line setup, operator learning, and gradual improvement in efficiency.
8. Weak Material Follow-up
Even the best production schedule cannot succeed if fabrics or trims are unavailable.
Production planners should regularly monitor material status and coordinate closely with the sourcing and warehouse teams to ensure that materials arrive before production begins.
Material shortages often lead to idle production lines and missed shipment dates.

Some planning decisions are still based mainly on experience or assumptions.
Modern planning should be supported by production reports, line efficiency, Work-in-Progress (WIP), capacity utilization, throughput time, and order progress.
Using accurate production data leads to better planning decisions and faster problem-solving.
10. Treating Production Planning as Only Scheduling
Perhaps the biggest misconception is that production planning simply means preparing a Time and Action (T&A) calendar.
In reality, Production Planning and Control is much broader. It includes capacity planning, order allocation, production scheduling, resource management, monitoring, coordination, risk management, production control, and continuous improvement.
A planner's job is not only to prepare a schedule but also to ensure that the schedule is successfully executed.
